A native breed to the UK with excellent wool shedding traits, good grazing ability and some of the best eating characteristics I have found. We started performance recording these sheep in 1996, selecting heavily along maternal traits to produce a ewe that will rear lambs on grass alone. Starting with what was then an unimproved breed; genetic gains have been rapid and impressive. Our animals get sold onto commercial farms for a variety of purposes ---to breed the wool off woolly sheep, to improve present pure bred stock and as starter flocks for pedigree enthusiasts. They are most popular with farmers involved in direct marketing.
